The Potts House, an Antebellum Townhouse, circa 1848, was built by Nelson Potts, builder and master brick mason, as his personal residence.Potts built the home to show the citizens of Baton Rouge the quaility of his workmanship. Potts was undoubtedly one of the master builders of Baton Rouge from 1846 to 1867.Potts moved from Baton Rouge with his family just after the Civil War. The home is pictured in the Civil War Book, The Calvary, with Civil War troops bedded down beside it.The home was the second structure in Baton Rouge to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.Joining the reigster with the Potts house were other landmark proerties such as magnolia Mound Plantation, the State Capitol and the Pentagon Barricks. The home and the dependency building have been joined and used as a single family residence for the past 30 years. The dependency building can also be used as a guest house or as an office.
